Ajmer is famous for its religious background and as well as for an interesting history. A stronghold of the Chauhan Rajputs till the 12th century, the legendary Prithviraj Chauhan lost Ahmer when he was defeated at the hands of Mohammad Ghori in 1193 A.D. In 16th century the Mughal Emperor the great Akbar annexed the Ajmer as a part of the Mughal Empire and then Ajmer had a steady history again. Ajmer became, for the Mughals, first a centre of operations against the kingdoms of Rajasthan and Gujarat and later a centre of pilgrimage.
