About Jaisalmer : Different to any other city, this desert fortress is one of Rajasthan's most exotic and unusual towns. Jaisalmer, an significant ancient trading centre because of its strategic location on the camel trade routes, is often described as the 'golden city'. The havelis, built by merchants of the 19th century, are exquisitely carved from golden-yellow sandstone and are still in a beautiful condition. The fort built by Rawal Jaisal in the 12th century, stands on the 80 metre high Trikuta hill, with beautifully carved Jain temples. Jaisalmer has a fascinating legend linked with it, as per to which, lord Krishna- the head of Yadav clan foretold Arjuna that a remote descendent of the Yadav clan would build his kingdom atop the Trikuta Hill, His prophecy was fulfilled in 1156 AD. When Rawal Jaisal, a Bhatti Rajput abandoned his fort at Lodurva and founded a new capital Jaisalmer, perched on the Trikuta Hill Bhatti Rajputs of Jaisalmer were feudal chief who lived off the forced levy on the caravans laden with precious silks and spices that crossed the territory enroute Delhi-or Sind. These seems to be straight out of the "Tales of the Arabian Night ' still enchants. The ideal time to visit the golden city is during the Desert Festival held in Jan/Feb. every year, when the city echo to the sound of melodious tunes and rhythms. Folk dances, exciting competitions and contest, especially the turban-tying contest. How to Reach Jaisalmer : Air : The nearest airport is Jodhpur- 285 km. Rail : Jaisalmer is connected with Jodhpur by night train service. Road : Jodhpur- 285 km Barmer- 153 km, Bikaner- 325 km Delhi- 897 km, Pokhran- 112 km Jaipur- 638 km.
